Opinion: Right-back has an uncertain future at West Brom, could leave this summer

|

Kane Wilson has an uncertain future at West Bromwich Albion as he’s been short of playing time and is out of contract this summer. The 20-year-old finds himself behind Lee Peltier and Darnell Furlong in the pecking order and hasn’t made the matchday squad in any competition since 2017, as per Transfermarkt.

Who has scored the most Championship goals?

Wilson has made just one first-team appearance since signing a professional deal in 2016, so he’s embarked upon loan moves to Exeter City (August 31, 2017 – May 31, 2018) (January 14, 2019 – May 31, 2019), Walsall (August 3, 2018 – January 3, 2019) and Tranmere Rovers (August 9, 2019 – January 1, 2020) to get valuable playing time.

Albion may have a void to fill at right-back next season as Peltier is out of contract in the coming months, but it remains to be seen if Wilson is good enough to make the step up. As per Transfermarkt, the 20-year-old has played in League Two and League One, but he has no Championship experienced under his belt.

The Baggies are on the cusp of promotion to the Premier League this season, so it’s unlikely Wilson will be promoted to the first-team. Slaven Bilic is more likely to sign a replacement if Peltier leaves, so the young defender may be allowed to leave.

The 20-year-old’s contract doesn’t come with the option to extend for 12 months, so Albion would need to open formal talks to keep him.
