West Brom confirm fresh agreement with 27-y/o

|

Goalkeeper Jonathan Bond has signed a new contract with West Brom, the club have revealed.

Bond had been out of contract at The Hawthorns following the conclusion of last season, but the ‘keeper is now set to remain with the Baggies for the time being, having continued to train with the club over the course of the summer.

The 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal with West Brom, securing his future with the club until the end of the coming season.

Having joined the Baggies from Reading back in the summer of 2018, Bond has made just seven appearances in all competitions for the club, largely playing second fiddle to Sam Johnstone during that time.

With that in mind, it does seem slightly surprising that Bond has agreed this new deal with the club.

Bond has never really been given an opportunity to secure a place in the first-team during his stint at the club, and with the Baggies also announcing the signing of David Button from Premier League rivals Brighton at the weekend, it is hard to see Bond’s game time increasing in the next year.

Indeed, it did seem as though Bond had opportunities to head to the Championship in recent months, and you thought he might have been tempted to take one of those offers in the hope of establishing a number one spot for himself going forward.

That being said, you can understand the appeal of being a Premier League player, which may have influenced his decision to stay, and having an extra element of competition for that spot between the posts is not necessarily a bad thing for Slaven Bilic and co.
