West Brom announce deal for 31-y/o

|

West Brom have completed the signing of goalkeeper David Button on a permanent transfer from Brighton, the Baggies have confirmed.

Button joined Brighton two years ago from Fulham, but made just a handful of appearances during his time with the Seagulls, after failing to overhaul Mat Ryan as the club’s number one.

Now Button will attempt to do the same thing with Sam Johnstone at The Hawthorns, having signed a two-year contract with the Baggies.

Speaking to West Brom’s official website about the prospect of challenging Johnstone for the number one spot following confirmation of the deal, Button said: “I have ambitions of playing and helping the team as much as possible but I obviously understand that Sam has got them promoted last season so he will start the season.

“I have ambitions of playing and helping the team as much as possible but I obviously understand that Sam has got them promoted last season so he will start the season.”

Although the official price of the transfer is undisclosed, previous reports from elsewhere had suggested that the Baggies would have to pay Brighton around £1million to secure the services of Button, and getting this deal over the line will surely be pleasing for Slaven Bilic and co.

It has seemed as though the Croatian wanted to add some extra competition for Johnstone between the posts this summer, and they have done that now with an experienced and reliable option in the shape of Button.

Indeed, having spent much of the last two season on the bench at Brighton, you feel Button is not going to want to find himself in a similar situation at West Brom over the next couple of years, meaning he will surely be doing all he can to get himself ahead of Johnstone in the pecking order once the season gets underway again.
