Report: West Brom figure delivers emphatic message to authorities over season plans

|

Slaven Bilic insists that the football season needs to be played to a finish, even if that means waiting months.

Despite the Championship campaign coming to a halt around five weeks ago, we’re still unclear on how, or if, the season will be completed, with nine games left on the fixture list in the second tier.

With Leeds United and ourselves in commanding positions to win promotion, that is a concern to some. And, whilst acknowledging football is not the most important thing right now, Bilic told the Express & Star that playing the final part of the season is the only option.

We should try to do everything to finish it, even if it drags on until September. I think that is it is very fair and right and legal for it to finish. You can’t ignore that we have played three-quarters of the season. You can’t void it.”

Will the Championship season be completed?

Yes

No

It has been suggested by ESPN that the Football League have identified early June as a potential date to resume the campaign, although it’s obviously hard to commit to that given how quickly things can change. There has been some positive news on the continent though, with German clubs back in training as they hope for a May restart.

Either way, I have to agree with the boss here. You could understand some calls to void the season if you had played 10-15 games, or maybe if you were halfway through. But, with over three-quarters of the fixtures already completed, it would be extremely unfair to take that away from teams up and down the country who have fought to put themselves in such a good position.

Ultimately, there shouldn’t be a rush to make a decision and we will only return when it’s safe to do so, however most would echo Bilic’s verdict in that the season needs to be completed – whenever that may be.
