Report: Reliable Championship journalist claims West Brom target is ‘likely’ to join rival side

|

West Brom could miss out on former striker Dwight Dayle this January with Nottingham Forest the reportedly most likely side to sign the Newcastle attacker.

According to Phil Hay of The Athletic via The Nottingham Post, Gayle is expected to leave the Premier League side this January after barely featuring for Steve Bruce’s side, but despite making a move to West Brom where the former Crystal Palace striker thrived at last season, Forest are the side most ‘likely’ to secure the attacker’s services.

The report claims that Forest, who sit in fourth in the Championship table, were interested in Gayle in the summer transfer window, whilst Leeds were keen on the Newcastle attacker, however, Financial Fair Play restrictions and a reluctance to sign players in January have seemingly quashed any move for the Premier League attacker.

Do West Brom have the best squad in the Championship?

Yes

No

Whilst scoring goals hasn’t been much of an issue for West Brom this season, with the Championship table showing that the Baggies have the best goal difference out of any side in the division, losing out on a former star in Gayle to a league rival could be disastrous for Slaven Bilic’s side.

As stats from Transfermarkt show, Gayle is a force in the Championship with the 29-year-old striker was influential for both West Brom last season and Newcastle in their season in the second division in 2016/17, with the attacker scoring 46 goals and assisting another 10 in 71 league appearances.

Although Gayle has hardly played this season, with stats from Transfermarkt showing that the striker has played just over 20 minutes of Premier League football for the Magpies, the former West Brom man would be a good signing for Forest and one that could see the Nottingham-based side push themselves into the automatic promotion spots, putting Bilic’s squad in potential jeopardy of missing out on a top-two finish.
