Opinion: West Brom’s title hopes lay in tatters if they fail to address concerning squad defect

|

This season has been one that has started very well for West Brom fans, and as they approached the festive period in the middle of December things looked good for the West Midlands side. However, things have now very quickly turned sour.

The Baggies’ defeat away at Cardiff City on Tuesday evening saw them drop to 2nd, with Leeds United overtaking them in the table after their impressive comeback victory over Millwall at Elland Road, and it’s high time that Slaven Bilic changed the tune at The Hawthorns.

In the Baggies last nine games, they’ve won just twice. Unfortunately, though, those two wins both came in the FA Cup, with victories away to Charlton and West Ham seeing them advance to the competition’s 5th round. Aside from those wins, though, West Brom are seven games without a win in the league.

The Championship is not an easy league to get out of by any stretch either, and if the Baggies keep going the way they are then their title hopes, and indeed their promotion hopes, will be left in tatters. A lot of that can be solved by bolstering one key area.

Going forward, the Baggies are effective. The likes of Matheus Pereira, Grady Diangana, Matt Phillips, Hal Robson-Kanu and Charlie Austin have all proven to be effective goalscorers, but at the back, the Baggies are showing to be leaky.

Are West Brom going to bottle their position in the top-two?

Yes

No

Of the top five teams in the Championship, West Brom’s 33 goals against is the highest, and Bilic will have to stop his side conceding so many, as it’s got to a point where his forward line just cannot keep up. Changes are needed at The Hawthorns, and if they don’t happen then what promised to be a wonderful season could so quickly end up in play-off heartbreak.
