West Brom’s promotion battle took another huge twist on Saturday afternoon, with the prospect of an automatic return to the Premier League now suddenly back in the Baggies’ hands.
A 2-1 defeat away at struggling Huddersfield on Friday night had seemingly left Slaven Bilic’s side facing the prospect of the play-offs for a second straight season, with Brentford inserted into pole position in the battle for a place in the top-flight.
However, that was something the Bees were unable to take advantage of on Saturday, as their run of eight consecutive wins came to an end with a 1-0 defeat at Stoke thanks to Lee Gregory’s 38th-minute goal.
That result means that West Brom now go into the final day of the season still sat in the second automatic promotion spot, one point clear of Brentford, knowing that a win away at QPR will guarantee their promotion regardless of results elsewhere.
