“West Bromwich Albion’s position in this remains the same”: Key Baggies figure delivers clear message

|

West Brom chief executive Mark Jenkins has reiterated that the club want the season to be completed as they look to win promotion to the Premier League.

The EFL have recommended that Football League clubs use a points per game system to decide final placings if the campaign isn’t played to a finish – something that would benefit Albion. With Slaven Bilic’s side currently six points clear of third-placed Fulham, they know they would go up if the season didn’t restart or if it was cut short in the opening weeks.

Despite that, the club are adamant that they feel the season should be completed, which is what the authorities want as well. And, speaking to the club’s media, Jenkins made it clear that the only focus is on restarting when it’s possible.

Will the Championship season be completed?

Yes

No

Let me say at the outset that West Bromwich Albion’s position in this remains the same now as it was back when fixtures were halted – the Club is resolutely behind finishing the campaign, if it is at all possible, where it belongs and that is on the pitch.

From the moment that the path was cleared for the players to return to training, albeit in a regulated and strictly-controlled format, our mindset has been focused solely on being in the best possible shape, physically and mentally, to complete the remaining nine league fixtures.”

Like clubs up and down the country, Albion’s players returned to training yesterday, although they had to obey the strict rules that Jenkins mentioned. Nevertheless, it was a significant first step towards the season continuing next month.

Whilst West Brom are in a pretty commanding position with their six point advantage over Fulham, they are due to play the Cottagers before the campaign ends in what could be a pivotal clash. Bilic’s side had also failed to win in three, in all competitions, prior to this enforced break.
