Report: West Brom interested in 14-cap international at Champions League club

|

West Brom have shown an interest in signing Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer this summer, a report from The Athletic has claimed.

The Baggies are seemingly in the market for a centre back this summer as they prepare for a return to the Premier League next month, and it appears as though Ajer has emerged as a potential target for Saven Bilic and co.

According to the latest reports, Ajer could be allowed to leave Celtic this summer, and the Baggies have shown some interest in the centre back, who has made 132 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish champions since joining from IK Start in the summer of 2016.

Ajer has also been capped 14 times at senior international level by Norway, and it seems the defender will not be coming to The Hawthorns cheaply this summer.

It was reported earlier this summer that AC Milan have seen a £13.5million bid rejected for Ajer, who is also said to have attracted attention from defending Premier League champions Liverpool in the past.

As things stand, there are two years remaining on Ajer’s contract at Celtic, something which is likely to be a source of frustration for West Brom.

The Baggies could certainly do with some defensive reinforcements ahead of their return to the top-flight, and Ajer does seem to fit the bill nicely, in terms of his experience, ability, and the fact that he is still in the relatively early stages of his career.

However, with Celtic in a strong position to negotiate any offers that come in, and seemingly wanting a significant, eight-figure fee for the centre back, this could be difficult for West Brom to pull off on what looks to be a rather streamlined budget this summer.
