Head coach Tony Pulis has praised the Albion medical staff for ensuring the players were in top condition following the victory over Newcastle United.

Dominating the match with a plethora of wasted chances, skipper Darren Fletcher put recent disappointments behind us with his 78th minute headed winner, and Pulis couldn’t have been more delighted at full time.

Speaking to wba.co.uk in his post game press conference, Pulis hailed his backroom boys for keeping everybody in tip top shape following the hectic Christmas turn around in fixtures.

‘The first ten minutes we should have been three up and the game could have been over but the longer it goes on the more we need to give Newcastle credit – they defended stoutly. Thankfully the goal came at the end. And we deserved it. Our fitness levels were superb. The work and recovery our medical staff have done to turn the players over from one game to the next deserves great credit.’

With Victor Anichebe being one of the star performers on the day with the way he ran and bullied their defence, he came in for particular praise from the gaffer – especially as it was only his third appearance of the season. With injury problems seeming to dominate his spell at The Hawthorns though he went off a few minutes from time with a hamstring injury and we also lost Jonas Olsson in the first half with an injury of his own.

‘Vic is a top player. He showed that today. They just couldn’t handle him and he did very well. Fingers crossed he and Jonas will be ok for the Stoke game – it’s been suggested that it might just be cramp. Hopefully it won’t be any more.’

With a first win in six attempts now secured, Pulis will be hoping to put some of the doubts surrounding the club behind him now and get on a run of victories as the last time we registered back to back wins this year was in October.
