West Brom have moved rapidly to appoint a first team coach. Peter Grant joins the Baggies as a replacement for the recently departed Craig Shakespeare who has chosen to further his career as Assistant Manager to Nigel Pearson at Leicester City.
Grant is a high quality coach who helped West Ham to reach the Premiership and an FA Cup Final under the then Manager Alan Pardew. Following his decision to leave the Hammers to take up the Manager’s chair at Carrow Road West Ham were never quite the same team and Pardew was soon to follow Grant out of the door but this time against his wishes.
Grant’s time at Norwich started brightly but the boo boys soon got on his back, quite unfairly. Norwich had had one season in the Premier League and their fans expectations meant that Grant’s tenure was doomed to failure with the lack of resources available at the Canaries.
Still Norwich’s loss is the Baggies gain.
Mowbray knows Grant well from four years spent together at Celtic in the nineties and he was impressed by his passion, enthusiasm and considers his Premier League experience to be invaluable for the coming campaign.
Grant of course had other offers from within the game but his decision was made easy because of Mowbray’s passionate belief in the way the game should be played. Grant recognises that the Baggies, under the guidance of Tony Mowbray are trying to build the club into a recognised Premier League outfit by playing the game properly and he wants to be part of it.
Mowbray’s vision for the future, which seems to be shared by all around from Board to players and fans, is one that new signing Gianni Zuiverloon has already bought into.
Decent players will want to sign for a club that plays the game the way it is intended to be played and I’m sure more signings will come and further praise will be heaped upon Mowbray. All of it deserved.
