Shane Long has said that the performance and result against Southampton shows that the team have the desire to end the season on a high.

Speaking to wba.co.uk Long said.

‘We set high standards and it would be very easy to just see the season out, the gaffer’s set us some targets, we’ve got the record number of wins, we’ve beaten last season’s points total, so now it’s getting to 50 points and finishing in the top 8. There was a dip around January and February, but overall I think we’ve been good.’

As for the Southampton game itself, Long admits that we did get the rub of the green but he feels that mostly down to the fact that the team worked hard, stuck to the game plan, and caused Southampton to make the errors that opened up for us.

He also rightly didn’t comment on whether or not he felt the elbow he received in the game was deliberate, but as will have been seen from TV replays, it was the correct decision from the referee – as was the sending of of Marc-Antoine Fortune following his reaction – and as Long says for the second sending off was a double footed challenge, so again the referee was spot on.

Looking down the string of headlines for today’s news, thankfully it doesn’t seem the three red cards have majorly overshadowed the performance we put in.
