Club confirm deal for West Brom player

|

Birmingham City have completed the permanent signing of attacker Jonathan Leko from West Brom, the Championship club have confirmed.

A graduate of the Baggies’ academy, Leko made a total of 23 appearances in all competitions for West Brom, scoring once, and spent last season out on loan with Charlton, a spell that was curtailed by injury.

Now the 21-year-old is on the move again, with Birmingham announcing the arrival of the attacker on a permanent basis.

Leko has signed a three-year deal with the Blues, which is set to keep him at St Andrews’ until the end of the 2022/23 season, with the club claiming they held off interest from several other clubs to secure his signature.

While the official fee is undisclosed, previous reports from elsewhere claimed that the Baggies had agreed a fee in the region of £1million for Leko, with both Birmingham and another Championship side in the shape of Sheffield Wednesday.

Things never really got going for Leko at West Brom sadly, so it does seem as though this is a move that could suit both parties.

The attacker ought to now get more game time than he is likely to have done at West Brom with their return to the Premier League this season, while the Baggies themselves have now secured a fee for the player that can be reinvested in their own squad.

Birmingham meanwhile have got a player who can certainly be a useful asset for them in the coming years, and you feel there will be a decent number of Baggies fans keeping an eye on just how Leko fares during his time at St Andrews’.
