Albion are set to seal a one-year deal for former Liverpool, Blackburn and Wigan midfielder David Thompson on a free transfer after he was released by Wigan at the end of last season.

Bryan Robson is a big fan of the midfielder and the fact that he can play on the right or left-hand side of midfield. At all the clubs that the midfielder has played for he has scored goals and will is a threat from either wing.

At 28 years-old the midfielder should be hitting top form and he will be hoping to stay fit to assist Albion in their quest for promotion this season.

The news that Robson is willing to try Zoltan Gera up-front this season means that the right midfield spot will need filling and Thompson has all the attributes to make it his own.

Born in Birkenhead Thompson started his career at Liverpool making his debut in 1996, the midfielder then joined Coventry City in 2000 where he was sent-off on his debut against Middlesbrough. Thompson left Highfield Road in 2002 where he joined Graeme Souness at Blackburn Rovers where he stayed until January last year when he joined Wigan Athletic on a free transfer.

Should Thompson sign he will become Robson`s fifth addition to the Baggies squad following the signings of John Hartson, Chris Perry, Pascal Zuberbuhler and Michael Nardiello.
