Albion have signed Swiss international goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbuhler on a free transfer from Basle. Zuberbuhler joins Albion on the back of appearing in Germany at the World Cup. Zuberbuhler did not concede a goal in over 390 minutes of football; the only time the keeper was beaten was in the second-round defeat to the Ukraine where he was beaten in a penalty shoot-out.

Zuberbuhler had a good season for Basle last season as they finished second in their domestic league and and had a good run in the Uefa Cup.

Bryan Robson is happy to have added Zuberbuhler to the squad and said, “Pascal is a vastly experienced goalkeeper and with Chris Kirkland going out, we needed a replacement.

“He is No.1 with Switzerland and he was rated as one of the top couple of goalkeepers in the World Cup.

“It is up to Tomasz and him to challenge for a place.”

Zuberbuhler has won 44 caps for his country and has a great deal of European experience. It is thought that the keeper has been signed as cover for Kuszczak, but if the Pole decides to move on Albion will have to move fast to bring another keeper in as first choice.
