Manchester City striker Ishmael Miller came off the substitutes bench to score a debut goal as Albion recorded there first league win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Preston North End.

Miller signed for the Hawthorns club last Thursday on a seasons long loan deal from Manchester City and got off to the perfect start – scoring on his debut as the Baggies won 2-0.

Veteran striker Kevin Phillips netted his second goal of the campaign to fire the home side in front as Albion claimed there first points of the season.

Preston, who lost to Morecambe last Tuesday night in the League Cup will be drooling in defeat will be looking to improve the squad by next Saturday.

However it was the visitors who started the game on the right foot but Albion did well to keep striker Neil Mellor in check; Dean Kiely stopped Mellor’s third minute shot before four minutes later Mellor drove only for the keeper to save.

On 18 minutes Brett Ormerod headed wide before former Albion man Darren Carter was denied when Kiely bravely saved.

Albion then finally got into the game with Scottish international Craig Beattie heading straight at Wayne Henderson on 28 before shooting wide short after.

Youl Mawene was then savour of the first half for North End when he deflected James Morrison’s goal bound free-kick over the bat five minutes from time.

Albion threatened to take the game by the scruff on the neck in the second half, and they did; scoring twice to win the game 2-0.

Morrison drifted down the left hand side and crossed for journeyman Kevin Phillips who had an easy task of heading home into an empty net from six yards.

New signing Miller replaced scorer Kevin Phillips and the move was effective, rewarding Tony Mowbray with a goal on his debut. He bossed his way clear from the halfway line and charged through to fire past a deluded Henderson.
