Vela In Line For First Start Under Hodgson

Michael Appleton believes that Carlos Vela has worked his way into his first start under Roy Hodgson following his appearance against Chelsea.

Speaking to wba.co.uk Appleton said Vela was now under heavy consideration to start the game against Spurs given his effort and skill in games and on the training pitch.

‘We were delighted with Carlos’ contribution on Saturday, he looks very sharp in training. I’m sure he will be in the gaffer’s thoughts quite heavily after his appearance -he made an impact and he has scored a couple of goals and saved us a couple of times. If he gets an opportunity to start, I’m sure he’ll flourish.’

Following his goals against Stoke and Wolves, I thought Vela would’ve played a bigger part than he has done so far, but it seems either Roy doesn’t want to rely on him too much given he will be returning to Arsenal at the end of the season, or he’s protecting him and introducing him slowly.

With the form our established players have been showing, it’s probably the right decision. I’d like Vela to get more on pitch time as a sub, but it would be harsh to drop those in his positions from the start.
