This was one game too far for the Baggies, they visibly lacked energy and spark throughout the fixture. In the end the one nil scoreline was probably a bit flattering for Wigan but in tight games like this anybody can win and it was just unfortunate that it was Wigan.

The Baggies passed the ball around well enough throughout the game but they lacked urgency and never really looked like troubling Al Habsi. This was the third game in six days for Albion and it definitely showed with every Albion player looking below par. Every attack they had spluttered to a disappointing conclusion with players getting in each other’s way or making bad decisions. Jerome Thomas was again poor after his anonymous performance against West Ham he again failed to pose any threat to Wigan.

The Baggies may have been awarded a penalty mid way through the second half when Caldwell tripped Odemwingie very close to the edge of box but instead the referee gave a free kick which was probably the correct decision. This again came to nothing.

Albion were finally put out of their misery in the 70th minute when Moses found himself in space to fire across Carson’s goal and into the net, this all came from a Baggies’ corner which they had not got the energy to get back from. After they went behind Di Matteo brought on Fortuné and Cox but to no avail.

All in all this was a game to be forgotten and hopefully the players will come back refreshed for what is sure to be a challenge against Stoke City next week.
