Report: West Brom keen on signing 23-y/o midfielder who recently suffered relegation

|

West Brom are interested in signing Wigan Athletic midfielder Joe Williams, a report from Football Insider has claimed.

Williams only joined Wigan from Everton last summer, and enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at The DW Stadium, during which he made 40 appearances in all competitions for the Latics.

However, with Wigan now needing to raise some much-needed funds after entering administration, it looks as though Williams could soon be on his way out of the club, to the benefit of West Brom.

According to the latest reports, the Baggies are interested in bringing Williams to The Hawthorns this summer, as they prepare for their return to the Premier League next season.

It is thought that Wigan’s situation – which has seen them relegated to League One thanks to the 12-point deduction they incurred for entering administration – means that Williams could be available to the Baggies for around £1.5million.

That means that this could certainly be a useful piece of business for West Brom were it to happen.

Given Wigan’s current situation, the chance to play in the Premier League would surely be appealing for Williams, with this reported asking price certainly affordable for the Baggies, meaning it would be no huge surprise were they to pull it off.

Looking at his performances last season, Williams’ quality and tenacity in the centre of the park could certainly be useful for Slaven Bilic’s side, since you feel that fight is just what they will need as they aim to be competitive in the top-flight.

Indeed, with Chris Brunt gone and Gareth Barry also out of contract, the Baggies could do with some extra options in central midfield, meaning this does look as though it would be a sensible signing from every perspective.
