West Bromwich Albion succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at the Hawthorns to dent their hopes of Premiership football.

Former Derby County and Rotherham United striker Deon Burton lifted the hopes of Owls fans as they attempt to make a last ditch attempt of sneaking into the play-offs.

Burton headed home to win the game at Albion’s expense and put the Owls just five points behind sixth placed Wolverhampton with three games remaining.

To add to the Baggies demise they finished the game with just nine men after Neil clement and Darren Carter were shown their marching orders, both in stoppage time.

Defender Clement will now sit out a three match suspension, missing games against; Burnley (a), Coventry City (a) and Barnsley (h). That was his last league game, his next competitive fixture will now be next season unless the Hawthorns club make the play-offs.

Meanwhile Carter will miss the same three fixtures despite only receiving two yellow cards. The former Birmingham midfielder was already due to miss two matches to suspension after picking up ten bookings.

Deon Burton netted in the 59th minute to return their 7th win in the last ten games which was propelled the Owls up the Championship table.

Albion are in a torrid situation, they have not won at the Hawthorns since they overcame Cardiff City on 20 February and have since lost four out of their last five fixtures in front of the Baggies faithful.

The Baggies only have themselves to blame for their latest failure having being handed enough possession to have won this game, only to be outdone by great finishing by Burton.

Chris Brunt whipped in a pinpoint cross from the left which Burton managed to stab home, keeper Dean Kiely looked to have kept it out but the officials and TV replay judged it didn’t, just crossing the line as the visitors took the lead.

Albion, to their credit bounced back and hit Wednesday straight away – Diomansy Kamara headed wide on two occasions and Robert Koren shot wide of the mark as the Owls held on for the victory.

West Brom failed top make their opposition pay in the first half despite the amount of possession they held. Owls keeper Iain Turner twice denied Darren Carter whilst Richard Wood stopped Kamara’s goalbound drive.

Kamara was a constant threat to the Wednesday goal, and were relived to see his shot on 24th minute slash into the side netting.

Northern Ireland international Chris Brunt was the Owls greatest threat down the left hand side, but a misplaced pass from Sam Sodje on 29 minutes brought out an opportunity for the away side. Steve MacLean intercepted his back pass, but the striker was unable to hit the target.

Nathan Ellington, after four minutes saw his shot blocked before firing wide.
