Opinion: West Brom exit continues to be a nightmare for 32 y/o midfielder

|

Claudio Yacob left West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2018 and joined Nottingham Forest on a free transfer. The 32-year-old’s stint at the City Ground didn’t go to plan, however, and he ended up leaving Forest after 18 months to join Uruguayan outfit Nacional.

But Yacob made just a handful of appearances before picking up a muscle injury, capping a nightmarish two years away from the Hawthorns. Where did it all go wrong for the Argentinean?

Who has scored the most Championship goals?

Yacob joined West Brom from Racing Club in 2012 and went on to make 175 appearances in all competitions, contributing only three goals. He spent six years at Albion before being released at the end of the 2017/18 campaign. And that’s where things started to fall apart for the defensive-midfielder.

The Argentine lost his starting place in his final season at West Brom and saw history repeat itself just months into his stint at Forest. As per Transfermarkt, Yacob was left out of the matchday squad until November 2018 and was a regular until the end of January 2019. He made 17 appearances for the Reds, 12 of which came in that three-month window.

Yacob made just four league appearances from February onwards, spending the majority of his time out of the matchday squad or as an unused substitute. And after being frozen out the following season, he left in January 2020 and joined Nacional.

The 32-year-old has made only four appearances for his new club and already picked up a muscle injury that kept him out of two games. His contract runs until December 2020, but things are on pause due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, it’s been a forgettable couple of years for Yacob and he’ll look forward to getting back to some normality soon.
