No pressure to return for Meite

Despite needing all of the help we can get at the back, there are no plans to bring Abdoulaye Meite back from the African Cup of Nations.

Meite could well be in action in Ivory Coast’s opening game of the tournament, against Burkina Faso, despite all of the confusion caused by the recent shootings.

Following the ambush on Togo’s team bus last Friday, several Premier League managers have expressed fears for the safety of their players and have been keen for them to return.

Instead the West Brom staff, while sensitive to last week’s events, are happy for the central defender to remain in Angola with the rest of his international squad.

A club spokesman said: “After Friday`s tragic events, we`re obviously concerned about Abdoulaye`s well-being. He takes great pride in playing for the Ivory Coast and the club will support any decision he and his national association decide to make.”

Reasoned thinking seems to be evident, indeed essential, in this case.
