New signing Gareth McAuley has said he is determined to make the most of his dream Premiership move to the Baggies.

Speaking to wba.co.uk after the announcement was made that he would be joining us on a free transfer from Ipswich on July 1, McAuley said he was relishing the chance to step up with the big boys and enter the twilight of his career on a high.

‘It’s been a bit of a whirlwing since the end of the season, I sort of knew of the interest and there were a few other clubs but coming here got me really excited and I’m delighted to be here.’

31 year old McAuley will be Captaining Northern Ireland for the second time tonight in the Carling Cup of Nations against the Republic of Ireland, so it’s a good chance for most Baggies to get a look at a player we might not know much about.

For himself, McAuley knows he’s joining the top flight rather late in his career and he knows the hard work is now ahead of him to establish himself in the team and impress Hodgson enough to cement a starting place.

‘I’ve got a lot of hard work over the summer and over the coming seasons to try and establish myself at this level. The gaffer told me he has seen me play a few times, he was impressed and he wanted me to come here to work with him and develop my game.’

It’s going to be interesting to see how he slots in to the team as the overall form of our centre halves since Roy’s arrival hasn’t been too shabby at all.

Welcome to the club Gareth!
