Gareth McAuley has said he was delighted with his first Premiership match, as it was everything he dreamed it would be.

Speaking to wba.co.uk the 31 year old new signing said.

‘It’s what you work for and it’s what all the sweat and hard work in the gym is for, to get a chance to play in the best league in the world. It’s fantastic and hopefully I can go on now and try to establish myself in the team here and do well for West Brom.’

McAuley knows that despite the clean sheet on his debut, competition is fierce at the Baggies and he needs to keep impressing Hodgson so he stays high on the pecking list.

‘Everyone is challenging for places, we’ve got four centre backs and only two places in the team. We’ll have to wait and see, my aim before the game was to make sure I defended properly and put in a half decent performance to put the other lads under pressure, especially knowing that Gabi is coming back. Hopefully I have done enough to push myself into the head coach’s thoughts.’
