Roy Hodgson couldn’t fault the performances of the players brought in to replace missing trio Reid, Brunt and Scharner, but he believes their absence was key in todays loss to Wolves.

Speaking to wba.co.uk after the match today Hodgson was adamant that the match would’ve turned out differently had he been able to put out his preferred first team because the missing trio give us a serious height advantage during games.

‘Set plays were a concern for us before the game because 3 important players who are good in the air were all missing. We replaced them with good footballers but footballs who are not as adept at winning heading duels.’

Hodgson also denied suggestions that the players had taken their foot off the gas after being made mathematically safe following the matches yesterday.

It’s just one of those days, and hopefully we won’t get too many more of them under his stewardship.
