“I really don’t know”: West Brom man makes honest admission amid current uncertainty

|

West Brom striker Charlie Austin has admitted he has no idea if the season will resume as Albion wait to see if they have the opportunity to win promotion.

Slaven Bilic’s side have been brilliant this season and they sit second in the Championship with just nine games to play. Importantly, they hold a six-point lead over third-placed Fulham and would be expected to finish the job off if the campaign does resume.

However, nobody knows if that will be the case. Whilst the EFL have reiterated their hope to play out the last nine fixtures, there is an acceptance that it may be difficult to do just that and concerns have also been raised as to what will happen if a player tested positive for the virus after the restart.

With France joining Belgium and Holland in confirming that no more games in the 19/20 season will be played, it has left some fans worried about what will happen in England. Leeds United, who are a point ahead of the Baggies, are in the same boat as Albion and one of their fans asked Austin on Twitter for his opinion on how this will play out. And, the striker admitted he doesn’t know and he stressed the importance of not taking any risks.

Honestly Mike I really don’t know, I hope it does get finished of course but people’s safety has to come first that includes the players.”

It has been claimed previously that the Football League could complete the season within 56 days once it started, with EFL chief Rick Parry encouraging a return to training in mid-May but that is going to depend on government guidelines.
