Despite the dramatic scoreline, Roy Hodgson has said he was pleased with Craig Dawson’s Premiership bow.

Speaking to wba.co.uk Hodgson said that Dawson didn’t deserve to finish the game on the losing side given the quality of his debut.

‘It was difficult choosing between him and McAuley because I like them both and Craig had those excellent matches for England U21’s and has been confident and in good form, whereas Gareth is still recovering from the virus. That tipped the scales in Craig’s favour. His debut was quite good, his positional play was good, he worked very hard. Once or twice he produced some good defensive moments, so I would say he will be quite happy with his individual debut but won’t be happy that he’s on the losing side.’

To lose 3-0 on your debut is never a great thing to do, and whilst he will face harder and tougher games in terms of his involvement, he did well and it’s something for him to build on.
