This fortunate result may have just changed West Brom’s season for the better – Opinion

After dropping two points against Wigan Athletic, the Baggies needed a miracle to restore their former lead in the table, and they got just that on Saturday.

As well as coming from behind twice to beat rivals Birmingham City, table rivals Leeds United capitulated in their home fixture against Neil Harris’ Cardiff City side which saw the Bluebirds fight back from 3-0 down with 30 minutes to go and a man down to claim a 3-3 draw, allowing West Brom to return to the top of the Championship.

With Leeds being one of the most dominant home sides in the English second-tier this season and Cardiff’s form away from the Welsh capital being questionable at best, it was a miraculous weekend for West Brom after it appeared Slaven Bilic’s side had bottled their lead in the Championship, but football has its funny ways.

Will West Brom be top of the Championship going into 2020?

Yes, we have the form to win every game

No, the festive period is just too hectic

A two-point lead at the top of the table has been reinstated by the Baggies after a fortuitous weekend, and the results in both fixtures have put West Brom in the driving seat for the top spot in the Championship heading into the most hectic period of the season.

From now until New Year, West Brom and Leeds both play three games in the Championship, and this latest twist in the season could prove to be a huge mentality booster for the Albion whilst being the complete opposite for Marcelo Bielsa’s swashbuckling side.

Maximum points will be the goal for Bilic in this period of the season, and with Leeds facing off against the likes of Fulham and Preston North End, there is potential that West Brom can build on their lead in the Championship table should the Whites continue to wobble following from this latest result.
