England U21 coach Stuart Pearce has praised Craig Dawson for his bravery after he headed his third U21 goal in four games and won himself seven stitches to the head.

Speaking to wba.co.uk Pearce was delighted with his commitment and the fact that he wanted to play on through the pain after sustaining the gash after only 25 minutes of the match.

‘I always made sure I had my elbows up in the air and protecting my face, that’s why I’m still very pretty,’ joked Pearce.

‘He’s got great courage, he’s a man, is Dawson. The rest of the boys love him to bits.’

Speaking himself after the game, Dawson admitted his head was a bit sore but he said the result was worth it.

‘I had seven stitches. I went up for the header and I think I caught his boot on the way down, and it split quite easy. I was always going to come back on. The doc just wanted to stitch it up.’
