This last seven days has been tremendously busy at the Hawthorns. On Saturday the Baggies surrendered to Manchester City by giving away two needless penalties and coming away with a three nil loss. At Sunday lunchtime the news came out that Roberto Di Matteo had been relieved of his duties and placed on garden leave, Eddie Newton and Ade Mafe left the club with immediate effect.
The following days saw various candidates getting to the top of the favourites list and then being removed again. Former Blackburn manager and one time West Brom coach Sam Allardyce removed himself from the list having been top choice with the Bookies. In truth he was never considered a serious contender by Albion’s Board and his style of football would definitely be a turn off for Baggies fans who have become accustomed to attractive open play under Tony Mowbray and Roberto Di Matteo.
erek McInnes and Caretaker Head Coach Michael Appleton then became the favoured pairing to takeover before it was revealed late on Wednesday that Chris Hughton was the man in talks with Albion and likely to be appointed on Thursday barring any hitches.
Thursday came and at the pre match press conference the Baggies revealed that nobody had been offered the job and that Michael Appleton would be in charge of team affairs for the must win game against West Ham on Saturday.
Betting then went heavily in favour of Roy Hodgson who had appeared to remove himself out of the running earlier in the week. Then on Friday morning it was announced that Roy Hodgson would be taking over as Head Coach at the Hawthorns and that Michael Appleton, Keith Downing and Dean Kiely would be remaining at the club to assist him.
Appleton will be in charge for the West Ham game and Hodgson’s first game will be the local derby against Wolves on the 20th February.
Wow, what a week.
