Roy Hodgson believes the Liverpool victory was meant to be as Peter Odemwingie put himself in the same bracket as Jeff Astle 45 years ago.

Speaking to wba.co.uk after the 1-0 win, Hodgson was obviously beaming.

‘It’s always enjoyable to win, even if you need a bit of luck on your side to achieve it. We know how difficult it is to get a win here, but 45 years? That’s another hoodoo, if you like, laid to rest.’

Hodgson never comes over as a man who believes in superstitions or fate, but he did add.

‘Maybe this result was written in the stars because, 45 years to the day, maybe there is an element of fate about it.’

As for the performance, I don’t think Hodgson could’ve asked anything more.

‘I thought it was a very determined effort, they showed an awful lot of commitment. We were grateful to a lot of good blocks and saves from our keeper. When those two things didn’t work, we had a little bit of luck with balls hitting the post or the goalkeeper’s face when he knew nothing about it! Credit to our boys for hanging on in there.’
