Roberto Di Matteo has said that he still believes he could’ve kept the Baggies up, but he was delighted to see Peter Odemwingie have a sterling first season in the league.

Speaking to the E&S DM broke what has been a pretty good silence since leaving the club, and whilst obviously there’s a sense of unfinished business, he certainly doesn’t sound bitter about how his time at the club came to an end.

A gentleman as ever.

‘I’ve been very grateful to the club, they gave me a chance, the players were magnificient and very good to me. But when decisions are made you have to accept them, that’s football. We were very confident that we had the players to stay up.’

Speaking about the success of Peter Odemwingie he adds.

‘It was one of those where you get a DVD, like a player, do some research and it works out. It was a credit to our scouting network. I think he has had a great season and obviously we saw all the goals he scored, he was one of the main reasons they’ve done so well.’

DM says that although his first season will be difficult to top, Odemwingie is a proper team player and always works hard when on the pitch, so even if he can’t top his entrance to the league, he’s still going to be a big and important player for Roy Hodgson in the coming seasons, as long as he signs an extension.
