There has been criticism in some quarters for the decision to call off the derby match after some heavy snowfall on Saturday. However, in my mind it was completely right to make an early decision to postpone the game.
The early kick off time will not have helped to keep the game on. There would have been absolutely no chance for an improvement in the freezing temperatures and hazardous road conditions. It took me more than two hours to dig out my car yesterday and the thought of travelling out to a game and sitting in the icy cold for two hours before attempting to travel home again did not feel me with any great joy. Having used most of the Midlands’ motorway network today I can say for definite that it is not easy to travel safely around.
The postponement of the game confirms that the game is for the benefit of the fans as technically the game could have gone ahead but it would have been tremendously difficult to get 26,000 fans safely to and from the ground.
Yes it was the right decision to postpone and I am glad for one that the fans have been given some consideration. If only we could now get Sky to put games on at a reasonable time!
