Report: West Brom keen on signing League Two promotion-winner

|

West Brom are interested in signing Swansea City goalkeeper Steven-Andreas Benda, a report from The Sun has claimed.

Benda has yet to make a senior appearance for Swansea, but spent last season on loan at Swindon, who he helped win promotion to League One as League Two champions following the premature end to the campaign.

Now it seems as though Benda’s contribution to that success for the Robins has caught the attention of those at The Hawthorns.

According to the latest reports, Baggies boss Slaven Bilic is a fan of Benda, and is keen to bring him to the club as he looks to increase competition for the number one spot at the club.

As things stand, there are two years remaining on Benda’s contract with Swansea, securing his future at the Liberty Stadium until the end of the 2021/22 season.

It is thought that Bilic is keen to add to ‘keepers to his side to compete with Sam Johnstone for a place between the posts, with Wigan’s David Marshall, and Joe Hart – who is a free agent after leaving Burnley – also reportedly on the radar.

Would Benda be a good signing for West Brom?

Yes

No

These links with Benda are certainly interesting ones for the Baggies.

Given his lack of experience, it certainly seems as though this would be a big step up for him to make, particularly following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

However, it is worth noting that if they do get someone such as Hart or Marshall to compete with Johnstone, there will be no pressure on Bilic to throw Benda into the starting lineup at any point in the near future.

That will give him time to develop on the potential that Bilic clearly sees in him, making Benda a prospective number one for the Baggies in a few year’s time, should he make the move to The Hawthorns.
