Report: WBA set to sign former PL defender after being released from international training camp

|

West Brom are on the verge of signing former Swansea City left-back Martin Olsson after the defender left Sweden’s January training camp in Doha this week to complete a move.

Swedish outlet SportExpressen report that the former Premier League fullback is close to agreeing on a move to the Baggies after being a free agent for the first half of the season following his release from the Swans last summer.

With Slaven Bilic confirming last week via West Brom’s official website that both Nathan Ferguson and Kieran Gibbs remain out on the sideline for the immediate future, the signing of Olsson makes sense with the Baggies relying on Conor Townsend to fill in at left-back in recent weeks as stats from WhoScored show.

Do West Brom have the best squad in the Championship?

Yes

No

Olsson’s experience in both the Premier League and the Championship will be a much-needed addition to Slaven Bilic’s defence, which this season has been shaky in parts despite their standing in the league table.

As stats from Footy Stats show, the Baggies have one of the worst clean sheet records in the Championship this season, with the Albion sitting in 18th in the charts with just five shutouts all campaign after 27 games, and the signing of Olsson could help in remedying this poor figure.

The 31-year-old Swedish international has an abundance of experience playing in English football for both Swansea and Norwich City as stats from Transfermarkt show, and with West Brom’s two left-backs both out on the sidelines for the immediate future, Olsson could be a good signing for Bilic whilst Gibbs and Ferguson recover.

Olsson will be joining West Brom fighting fit after spending some time with the Swedish national team in January training camp in Doha, and this timely transfer could be massive in the Baggies improving on their defence for the second half of the Championship season.
