Report: WBA icon hints at coaching role after dismissing ‘walking away from football altogether’

|

Chris Brunt has hinted that he will go into coaching once he hangs up his boots at the end of a storied career and one where has asserted himself as an icon of West Brom.

The Baggies hero told The Express and Star that he would find it difficult to walk away from the game as a whole in his post-playing days, and that coaching could be his next step in football once he calls time on his 18-year playing career.

After nearly 13 years with West Brom, Brunt has engraved himself into club folklore after being named club captain in 2011 and sticking by the Baggies through two relegations back down the Championship, and the winger admitted that coaching will likely be his next call to action once his footballing days come to a close.

Should Chris Brunt retire from football this season?

Yes

No

The 35-year-old attacker said when asked about if he will take up coaching in the future: “I probably will. I think walking away from football altogether when you have been involved your whole life would be really tough. I’d probably like a bit of time off with my family to do bits and pieces that I haven’t been able to do over the last few years. But that will probably be something I will look into at some stage but hopefully not for a couple of years yet.”

With Brunt hardly featuring for Slaven Bilic this season and the former Northern Ireland international almost making a move to Stoke City in January as reported by The Stoke Sentinel, the prospect of retiring might be swimming in the winger’s head, and it could come sooner than expected.

A severe lack of minutes this season combined with a collapsed transfer could lead to Brunt calling time on his career sooner than expected, yet with West Brom looking likely for promotion to the Premier League this season, Brunt could be tempted to join the coaching staff for next season.
