Report: EFL chief reveals attempt to sign West Brom prodigy who “doesn’t get fazed by anything”

|

Northampton Town manager Keith Curle has revealed that he had previously attempted to sign Callum Morton before landing the attacker on loan in January this year.

Speaking to The Northampton Chron, the former Manchester City defender admitted that the Cobblers had tried to sign the 20-year-old West Brom academy prodigy in the 2019 January window, but a devastating cruciate injury ruled out any possibility of Morton joining the League Two side and ruling the attacker out for the remainder of the 2018/19 season.

Curle managed to land Morton on loan this season, though, and his patience has been well rewarded with the Baggies youngster hitting five goals in eight appearances for the EFL side as stats from WhoScored show, and the Northampton boss revealed that the attacking prodigy has been on the club’s radar for some time.

Is West Brom's academy one of the best in England?

Yes

No

The 56-year-old Potters chief said when asked about previous attempts to sign Morton: “Yes, we tried to sign him before the injury. He’s somebody that’s been on our radar for a while but I think there was a mishap on the last day of the window last year and it didn’t quite happen,” with Curle later adding: “He doesn’t get fazed by anything and his parent club are a very, very good football club and his ambitions are to play at that level.”

Morton’s form has certainly been impressive since joining Northampton in the latter stages of the January transfer window, and Curle’s rave review of the West Brom youngster goes to show that the Baggies have yet another exciting attacking prospect on their books who could one day make an impact in the first-team.

With Rayhaan Tulloch impressing at academy level as stats from FlashScore show and Kyle Edwards now a full member of the first-team, West Brom’s current crop of youngsters is a group that supporters have every right to be excited about, and with Morton now thriving in League Two, the 20-year-old could be the next promising name to leap from the academy into the senior squad.
