Head coach Tony Pulis has given his thoughts following the five three penalty shoot out victory over Port Vale in the second round of the Capital One Cup last night.

In quotes carried by the Stoke Sentinal from his after game press conference, Pulis was in bullish mood despite how hard Vale made the game for us, because he believed we could’ve won the game ten nil in normal time.

‘We could have scored 10 goals today. Just take Salomon by himself, he could have scored four goals. His movement is fantastic and I thought Lambert played two unbelievable passes to him that got him in. He’s hit the post and bar and Lambert has had great opportunities and the keeper has made a wonderful save going one way and then the other, and Rickie has hit the bar from distance. It’s been very exciting for the supporters and to finish and win on penalties is the right result because the best team won the game without any question of doubt.’

Pulis was also quick to praise Port Vale for their showing on the day.

‘I don’t want to give Vale any credit at all! I worked at Stoke for 10 years and I will not give Port Vale any credit. No, they played exceptionally well and worked hard and Pagey and Paul Bodin will be very pleased with them.’

In quotes carried by the Birmingham Mail assistant coach Dave Kemp also admitted we hadn’t practised penalties ahead of the game, so he was full or praise for the character and attitude of the players.

‘I`d like to say it came straight from the training ground and it was under my instruction. But it wasn`t. All the five that scored are good players and took responsibility to score the goals. We had lots of chances and sometimes that happens. The way football`s gone, with the Premier League so high profile now, they`re expected to breeze past teams, but that`s not the case. It`s a big day for them and they`re going to play to the best of their ability and you give them the respect they deserve. They played very well and made it a difficult game. We thought we picked a team that could win the game. We obviously wanted to make it a bit easier than we made it, but we`re through to the next round and we move on.’
