Ahhh another day and another James McClean moment sparking headlines.

There was an interview on wba.co.uk (click that link to read it all) where McClean did an indepth interview discussing himself, the controversy he sparks and the fact that all he’s doing when it comes to not singing the national anthem or wearing a poppy is respecting his own upbringing, family and principles and whilst I personally might not agree with him because I’d argue it’s not about ‘you’ in those moments it’s the bigger picture – I understand his reasoning and why he’d feel that way and don’t feel the need to throw my toys out the pram like the media do with it.

It made for a good and interesting read in any event, and maybe some may have opened their mind a little to him?

However we then get the handbags from yesterday and his full time celebration towards the Sunderland fans that saw him escorted off the pitch by Craig Gardner and others.

Now it’s a storm in a teacup and if the FA are going to look at anything it should be the reaction of the Sunderland players in my humble, and maybe they’d want to consider the chanting he was on the end of from their away travellers – but in any event a daft fist pump to do and totally unnecessary and it just cycles back to more bad headlines.

It did however lead head coach Tony Pulis to comment.

‘I haven’t seen what happened because I went straight to the dressing room at the final whistle, but I will take a look and if he is out of order I will speak to him. He’s not the sharpest tool in the box, and that’s not being disrespectful to him in any way because he is a smashing lad.’
