Opinion: West Brom won’t sign 26 y/o defender this summer despite reports

|

West Bromwich Albion were linked with a move for Morgan Fox in December 2019 along with Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Blackburn Rovers and Huddersfield Town, but nothing came of the interest.

It made little sense for Slaven Bilic to be on the hunt for a left-back given he had three at his disposal – Kieran Gibbs, Conor Townsend and Nathan Ferguson – so it’s unlikely they’ll be interested now either.

But the Sheffield Star named Albion as potential suitors for the 26-year-old in their latest report, insisting the Baggies are still in the race for his signature. Why?

Who has scored the most Championship goals?

As per Transfermarkt, Gibbs (10 league appearances), Townsend (21 appearances) and Ferguson (21 appearances) have shared the responsibility this season. Fox would be a good squad player, but he’d be filling a role West Brom have depth in.

The 26-year-old has turned things around at Sheffield Wednesday, making 31 appearances in all competitions this season. As per WhoScored, Fox has scored two goals, made one assist, whipped in 78 crosses with 23% accuracy, created 19 chances, completed 71.8% of his 699 passes, won 47 aerial duels (51%), had 16 shots with 12.5% accuracy, blocked 37 passes/crosses/shots, made 55 clearances and averaged a tackle (55) or interception (35) every 23 minutes.

Considering his contract is up this summer and he could be available on a free transfer, Fox wouldn’t be a bad signing. But it’s hard to see West Brom prioritising signing another left-back when Gibbs and Townsend still have a year left on their respective deals. Wednesday are in talks with Fox’s representatives and would have already liked to see him sign a new deal too.

Ferguson looks set to leave the club at the end of the season, but West Brom will be left with two competent fullbacks with a total of 559 appearances under their belt.
