Opinion: Signing linked central defender would show worrying lack of long term thinking at West Brom

|

West Bromwich Albion fans have enjoyed a brilliant season so far, but things need to change very quickly now if they are to maintain their spot at the top of the Championship and make the jump from the second tier to the top flight of English football.

However, Slaven Bilic and co will need to ensure that they can not only make the step up to the Premier League, but keep their place in the top flight amongst the great footballing sides, and recruitment is going to be absolutely key to that.

Keeping that in mind, the players who the Baggies look to sign during the final week of the transfer window need to be able to cut it in the Premier League, and cannot be exclusively signed for this six month period to help them make the jump and get out of the Championship.

That’s where we get onto these links, as West Brom have been linked with signing Rangers’ Connor Goldson this month, and whilst the 27-year-old should be approaching the peak of his powers, his time at Brighton and the fact he’s settled as a defender in Scotland should say all that needs to be said.

The links between the Baggies and Goldson have come from Football Insider but the issue is that not many players can successfully make the step from the Scottish top flight to the Premier League unless they’re a special case like Virgil van Dijk, and whilst Goldson could hack the Championship, we have reservations about his talents as a Premier League stopper.

Will Slaven Bilic guide us back to the Premier League?

Yes

No

We stand to be proven wrong should Goldson be signed by the Baggies this window and we certainly don’t want to see the club relying on Ahmed Hegazi in the Premier League, but there will almost certainly be better options for the West Midlands club, be it this month or in the summer.
