Opinion: Loan exit from West Brom couldn’t have gone worse for 22 y/o

Due to a lack of first-team football at West Bromwich Albion, Oliver Burke joined Deportivo Alaves on a season-long loan in August 2019. The 22-year-old hasn’t had the most successful time in Spain, however, as he’s been short of form and playing time.

Who has scored the most Championship goals?

Burke has made 22 appearances in all competitions for Alaves, scoring one goal and making one assist. But, as per WhoScored, the Scottish international has racked up only 791 minutes of Liga football, starting just seven games.

He’s completed 68.6% of his 207 passes, won 26 aerial duels (59%), made 19 successful dribbles (57.5%), had 14 shots with 21% accuracy, blocked 13 crosses/passes, won eight free-kicks, made seven clearances and averaged a tackle (12) or interception (8) every 39 minutes.

Burke has created only three chances, had an unsuccessful touch or was dispossessed every 32 minutes on average and whipped in nine crosses without finding a teammate. He had to wait until February to score his first goal for Alaves and hasn’t made an assist for six months.

The winger spent the season behind Aleix Vidal in the pecking order so he’s unlikely to look upon his time at the Estadio Mendizorroza fondly. Whether he has much of a future back at the Hawthorns remains to be seen, however, as Burke has failed to break into the squad over the last two seasons.
