Opinion: After latest disaster in a career of setbacks it’s time for West Brom man to leave

|

Despite being just 20-years-old, West Brom’s young winger Jonathan Leko feels like he’s been around and on the scene for a long time already in his short career. However, despite this season being his best so far in his career, it’s been ended prematurely and in the ultimate disappointment.

Despite racking up an impressive five goals and four assists in 21 games in the Championship for Lee Bowyer’s Charlton Athletic (Transfermarkt), the youngster has now suffered an ACL injury and will be out for a length of time that will see him miss the rest of this season and at least the start of next season.

This season is just the first time in his career, though, that Leko has managed more than 11 senior league games, as he’s previously had spells on loan at Bristol City and with the Baggies’ senior side, and with his first spell as a consistent first-team option has come his first time contributing goals and assists.

If it was already difficult for the youngster to get minutes at West Brom, it will only be made more difficult after a serious knee injury, especially if the Baggies win promotion this season and the youngster makes his return and has the daunting task of breaking into a Premier League side next season.

With that in mind, it could be time for Leko to leave the club and start his career again elsewhere. The Valley looks like a good place for him to try and restart his playing career after his efforts for the club on loan this season, and Bowyer clearly knows how to get a tune out of him.

Should Leko leave West Brom?

Yes

No

It will be interesting to see how Leko manages once he’s back to fitness and can play first-team football again after such a devastating injury, but he’s shown what he can do in the Championship this season and you can bet there will be teams who would take a punt on him in the second tier of English football.
