Baggies boss Tony Mowbray has dismissed “ridiculous” and “mischievous” reports that have suggested top scorer Kevin Phillips is set to depart the Hawthorns in the summer.

The addition of fellow ex-Villa striker Luke Moore, coupled with the fact that KP’s contract is up in the summer has led some to suggest that Kev will move on at the end of this season, should the Albion fail to gain promotion to the Premier League for 2008/09.

Mowbray told the Express & Star:

“Kevin’s been offered a contract and there are discussions going on between the club and his advisors – but it would be ridiculous to suggest what has been said.

“Kevin Phillips is the top scorer in our division and one of the top players in our division and it is mischievous to suggest otherwise.”

Regarding Phillips’ current lack of goals, Mowbray was similarly bullish:

“I wouldn’t call it a drought by a long shot. You can’t sit here and criticise any of our strikers.

“They’ve all scored goals all season long and we just need to keep going.”
