Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Chris Brunt has undergone a second scan today, whilst he also awaits news on the extent of Jerome Thomas’ groin strain.

Brunt missed the Spurs match with an unknown ankle issue he picked up previously and the first scan failed to identify the severity of the problem. Today he underwent a CT scan.

Speaking to wba.co.uk Hodgson said.

‘The ankle is very swollen so you can’t have a thorough scan until the swelling goes down. He has had a CT scan today, but we know it’s a serious injury. It’s just a question of the degree of seriousness. Is it season ending? Let’s hope not.’

Hodgson also admitted that Shane Long was left out of the squad as a precautionary measure and to give him a little longer to recover.

‘The thing with Shane is if we’re not careful, we could put him out for a long time if we keep asking him to play when he’s not 100% fit. It’s a balancing act.’

As for Jerome Thomas, Hodgson says he believes he fell foul, as did a couple of Spurs players, of playing 2 games in 3 days.

The groin strain isn’t expected to keep him out for long.

‘It’s the crazy English Christmas and New Year programme that all of us coaches and managers complain about.’
