West Bromwich Albion’s James McClean has been voted the Irish Sports Personality of the Year award for 2017.

RTE present the parallel version of the BBC’s UK version and it’s decided by a public vote and following his performances for the Republic of Ireland in their World Cup qualifying campaign and his goal against Wales clinching their place in the Play Off’s, he takes the gong for this season.

He picked up the award at home last Saturday and wba.co.uk have him quoted as saying.

‘It means a lot. It’s the Irish public voting for me and it’s an award that covers not just football but all sports. It’s something special for them to vote for me and something I’m immensely proud of.’
