Gareth McAuley is the latest player to visit the treatment table after limping off in the second half against Cardiff.

Speaking to wba.co.uk Hodgson explained that the defender suffered a calf strain and has paid the price for playing so regularly recently.

‘Gareth’s got a calf strain, that’s the price you pay for playing Everton and then Tottenham two days later. Unfortunately these things catch up on players.’

With the number of players out injured rising, Hodgson has recalled Chris Wood (Blues) and Joe Mattock (Portsmouth) to provide extra cover and both players found themselves on the bench against Cardiff and can expect to be involved with the first team until we are back up to strength.

‘At the moment, we’ve brought Wood back because he’s done well at Birmingham and I’m interested to see how he performs.’
