Roy Hodgson has challenged both Somen Tchoyi and Simon Cox to step up to the plate and impress given the injury lay off for Shane Long.

Speaking to wba.co.uk Hodgson said of Tchoyi.

‘The more chances he gets and the more he feels he’s being supported and we’re backing him, the better he will be. Certainly this year he has had a lot of starts already and he’s looking at a start on Saturday all being well. These are the times to deal with everyone’s expectations of you, there is no doubt in my mind that he’s got the ability, so it’s up to him now to make certain that ability shines through.’

Simon Cox can have a double benefit from the Long injury, not only by forcing his way in at Albion, but also at international level.

‘Of course Ireland need Shane because they have doubts about Robbie Keane and Kevin Doyle is suspended. Maybe our Simon Cox can help them. This also pushes Cox nearer our starting XI. His desire and enthusiasm has been there, and when he gets his chance, I’m sure he’ll be ready to take it.’
