Latest on West Brom’s African Bids

Roberto Di Matteo has turned to the Afican continent in his bid to strengthen his squad ahead of the closure of the transfer window.

First up is Lokomotiv Moscow’s Nigerian international Peter Odemwingie, the deal is done all bar his Visa. If West Brom were Manchester United you can bet the authorities would have rushed this one through in time for the weekend. However, as it is it looks like he will be joining up with the squad next week.

Next we have Somen Tchoyi, Red Star Salzburg’s Cameroonian international, who has had his medical today but personal terms have still to be agreed. Another, potential stumbling block could be the work permit but the Baggies hierarchy believe that it will be pushed through.

The other deal that is further away is that of Cheick Tiote, FC Twente’s Ivorian defensive midfielder. The Baggies have yet to receive a response to their £3m bid from the Dutch club who are keen to start a bidding war. Newcastle United have also been watching Tiote’s situation but sources close to the Geordies think that Albion may have already priced him out of their reach. Wolfsburg’s new Manager Steve McClaren, FC Twente’s old Manager is also said to be interested but no move has been made as yet.

The Albion faithful will be pleased if these deals come off as they will address areas that have been weak for a while now. Both Odemwingie and Tchoyi can play up front or on the wing and Tiote is a midfield hard man that will give the defence the protection they desperately need.
