Kirkland looking for top flight move

Albion boss Bryan Robson declared his interest in Chris Kirkland when the keeper returned to Liverpool due to injury last season.

Kirkland had spent the season on loan at The Hawthorns but lost his place in the side to World Cup bound Tomasz Kuszczak after the Pole came in and impressed for the injured Kirkland.

Albion took a gamble on the keeper at the start of last season when they took him on loan from Liverpool. He was just coming back from a niggling back injury but proved to Robson that he was worth a deal.

Kirkland started the season as number one choice but picked up an injury away at Bolton Wanderers that meant he lost his place to Kuszczak.

The former Coventry man struggled to win his place back and endured a frustrating couple of months when he was sent of in the reserves after asking to play and then he broke a finger which ended his loan period.

Robson confirmed that he would be interested in a deal for Kirkland but admitted that due to Albion’s relegation they may find it hard to tempt him into signing.

Robson said, ‘Chris has shown an unbelievable attitude,

‘He’s come in and been mixing with the lads.

‘He’s been training with us even though he can’t do any goalkeeping because of his broken finger.

‘He’s shown real commitment, so that will be a position we’ll be looking at to see if we can take it any further forward.’

Kirkland’s agent has spoken out concerning his client’s future and admitted that due to Albion’s relegation the keeper is looking for a move to the Premier League.

Chris Kirkland’s agent Colin Gordon has said, ‘I don’t think Chris will be joining West Brom as he wants to be playing at the highest level.’

In my opinion missing out on Kirkland wouldn’t bother me. We have more pressing positions than signing another goalkeeper.

Tomasz Kuszczak has been in fantastic form and is going to the World Cup this summer, even if we signed Kirkland I think he would only be back up to the Pole in goal anyway.

There are a number of cheaper goalkeeping options available and for a bit part player he would be an expensive option.
